Nagpur, being the centre of India, is a culmination of cultures and languages. It is also an upcoming food hub. With an inflow of people and investment, Nagpur’s street food and culinary scene has exploded. Be it the crowded streets of Sadar, the markets or Dharampeth or other happening hangout spots, every nook and corner of these areas have a food experience which you will rarely find anywhere in the country.
Culinary Centre
North-South-East-West, Nagpur has truly got it all when it comes to variety in food. Starting our journey from North India, butter chicken and tandoori chicken are the most sought after dishes, however very few get it right. But when in Nagpur, it is not a problem as you have the evergreen Barbeque restaurant serving the most authentic butter chicken and tandoori chicken. One taste of it will take you to a sensory dreamland of taste.
Moving on to the taste of East India, a bit cliche but also the most trending delicacy, the momo. A few years ago no one knew what a momo was in Nagpur. But thanks to vendors like Sikkim Momo in Civil lines and Eaat Street momo, the taste of the east is a few minutes away. Everyday in the evening one can see a queue of cars and bikes parked near these momo stations waiting to get their hands on this hot and versatile delicacy.
The Taste of India
South Indian restaurants are in abundance in Nagpur, but none match the taste of Gokul Vrindavan and Veeraswami. Every morning people queue up for breakfast outside these restaurants to get their dosa, vada sambar and idli. The smell of freshly prepared sambar is guaranteed to leave you with a watery mouth and the taste of it will never be enough.
Finally, the taste of the west is spicy and sweet. The spiciness is found in the legendary Saoji dishes of Nagpur. Rahi and Shankar Saoji and a couple of restaurants known for their amazing Saoji dishes such as khur and chicken saoji. Clubbed with roti and rice, these spicy dishes will surely test your patience and maybe make you cry, but also will leave you satisfied and fulfilled after you are done with them. To counter the spiciness, Nagpur is home to Haldirams, the go to place for all the sweetness you can get. A rajasthani ghevar or creamy gujarati dudhpak from Haldirams will surely fill you with happiness.
An inflow of people from all across India has made Nagpur into a small replica of the whole country. People bring experiences, culture, language and food with them. No wonder Nagpur is called the heart of India. It may soon be called the great Indian kitchen.
