Vidarbha's Pest Crisis Is Spreading Beyond Cotton Fields

Farmers across Vidarbha have grown used to watching their fields change colour before harvest, but not in the way they hope for.


What should be lush green cotton bolls and soybean pods often turn brittle, yellow or hollow well before the picking season begins. Behind this pattern lies a persistent problem that has troubled the region for nearly a decade, one that involves tiny insects, stubborn viruses and a monsoon that refuses to behave predictably.


Crop losses have become so frequent that many households now plan their finances around the possibility of a bad season rather than a good one.

Pink Bollworm Damage Drives Vidarbha's Cotton Crisis


Cotton remains the primary cash crop across Vidarbha, but Bt cotton, once seen as a reliable shield against pests, is no longer offering farmers the same protection.


Since around 2017 and 2018, outbreaks of the pink bollworm have turned into a near yearly event.

The pest's larva bores directly into the cotton boll, staining and hollowing out the fibre inside, leaving growers with thin, damaged harvests instead of full ones. By late 2017, close to 15 lakh hectares of cotton in the region and the neighbouring Marathwada belt had been devastated by pink bollworm alone, with yields cut by roughly a third across many fields. Several growers still describe that season as among the worst since Bt seeds were first introduced two decades earlier.


The insect never really went away. When fresh rains arrived in mid-2021, farmers again found pink bollworm damage in their standing cotton, particularly in the flowering fields of crops sown later in the season.


The local agriculture department flagged infestations that had crossed what it called the economic threshold in areas such as Wardha district. Because most growers now depend on Bt hybrid seeds, many believe the pest has built resistance to the very technology meant to control it.


An official said, "Farmers who have been using these GM seeds have faced regular infestations for at least four years." Some district offices responded by urging cotton growers to leave fields fallow the following season, or to install pheromone traps immediately to break the pest's breeding cycle. In practice, that advice often arrived too late to prevent losses already underway.


The damage to yields has been considerable. Cotton output in the worst-hit pockets can drop by 30 to 50 percent whenever pests surge through a field. Farmers in the western parts of the belt have watched cotton jassids, whiteflies and thrips attack young plants early in the season, only for bollworm larvae to strike again later once the bolls form.


A pattern has taken hold over the years. Growers who leave their crop standing beyond December, against the advice of agriculture officials, tend to see the heaviest bollworm damage. Many then rush whatever cotton they can salvage to market, flooding local ginning factories all at once and pushing prices down further. In some recent seasons, a late harvest fetched barely the government's minimum support price once pests had ruined the top grades. Weak prices combined with ruined harvests have pushed many growers deeper into debt, and some families have had to postpone weddings or their children's schooling until the fields recover.


Growers in these districts also contend with sap-sucking insects such as jassids, aphids and mirid bugs, which weaken plants directly and spread viruses between them. These insects breed quickly in warm, humid conditions, and the uneven monsoon has made outbreaks harder to predict.

During unusually dry spells, whitefly numbers can spike sharply, only to disappear once heavy rain arrives, but by then the cotton squares have often already shrivelled beyond recovery. Pest management has effectively become a year-round task rather than something confined to a single season.


Most farmers now spray chemicals more frequently than they used to, even as agronomists point out that awareness of integrated pest management remains limited, and that preventive steps such as terminating the crop early are frequently ignored.



Yellow Mosaic Virus Devastates Soybean Crops


Soybean is Vidarbha's other major kharif crop, and it has faced its own share of pest trouble.


In 2023, an outbreak of yellow mosaic virus swept through soybean fields just as the crop was nearing maturity.

Carried by tiny whiteflies, the virus causes leaves to turn yellow almost overnight before the plant collapses, ruining the pods forming underneath. By September 2023, as much as 40 percent of standing soybean plants in parts of Nagpur district had already turned yellow or wilted. Fields that had looked promising through the season faded to pale green and gold right at harvest time, after months of careful work.


Agriculture officials investigating the outbreak pointed to erratic rainfall as a likely trigger. A long dry spell had overheated the soil, only to be followed by heavy showers and high humidity. That combination encouraged fungal diseases such as collar rot, which weakened soy plants further, while also feeding the whitefly populations that carry the virus from plant to plant.


In some villages, close to 40 percent of the harvest failed once the virus took hold. A grain trading board in Yavatmal district went as far as passing a resolution demanding state assistance, after growers there saw sharp price declines on crops left yellowed and poor in quality.


Farmers describe the experience as sudden and disorienting. One grower from Yavatmal, who had bought quality seed and carefully tended a two-acre soybean field, recalled that only a few weeks before harvest, a strange disease struck without warning. His plants withered and yellowed so quickly that he had to uproot large patches by hand. He tried several pesticides suggested by the local krishi kendra, but none of them worked.


His experience was far from unique. By the end of the season, close to 15 percent of the state's soybean area, equivalent to roughly 8 lakh hectares, had been affected by yellow mosaic virus, with many of the worst-hit fields concentrated in the Nagpur division and neighbouring districts.


Facing these losses, farmers turned to insurance and government aid schemes. Crop insurance claims began being processed for affected growers, and orders went out for rapid damage assessments in Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Yavatmal.


A senior official noted that yellow mosaic virus is particularly difficult to contain, since even a small number of whiteflies can spread it rapidly across an entire field.

Farmers were advised to set up yellow sticky traps to catch adult flies early and to uproot any plant showing symptoms without delay. Officials also cautioned that similar outbreaks have appeared sporadically in the region before, with activist groups noting that these viral attacks tend to resurface from time to time in different parts of the belt.


The scale of the 2023 outbreak made clear that soybean fields are just as vulnerable to sudden pest pressure as the cotton crop grown nearby.


Financial Strain and Insurance Claims for Farmers


The toll of these pest invasions is measured in livelihoods across Vidarbha. Cotton and soybean together support millions of farmers and labourers, and when pests strike, the damage spreads well beyond individual fields.


Ginners find less work to do, grain markets thin out, and agricultural credit taken against the season's harvest goes unpaid. In a severe outbreak year, nearly every farming family in a village can end up feeling some effect. During the 2018 bollworm crisis alone, around 14 lakh cotton growers in the region lost more than a third of their expected yield. The 2023 soybean virus outbreak, by comparison, affected close to 15 percent of the state's soybean acreage, touching hundreds of thousands of growers.


With harvests cut short, many farmers lack the funds to sow the next crop on schedule. Community leaders describe households responding by cutting spending sharply, deferring weddings or school fees until after the next harvest, or borrowing at high interest rates just to get by. The fear of mounting debt runs through much of this anxiety. One regional campaigner warned bluntly that without compensation and support, the repeated losses would trap farmers in a cycle of crop damage followed by financial hardship.


The state government's response so far has included promises of per-acre relief for pest losses, similar to what followed the 2017 to 2018 bollworm wave, along with requests to insurers to speed up claims in the worst-affected talukas. Even so, farmers in 2024 say many payouts remain pending, and that they have received little beyond standard crop insurance.

As the kharif season drew to a close, results across the fields were mixed. Some farmers managed to salvage partial yields by shifting to different crops early or applying emergency sprays. Others simply pulled up wilted stalks and moved on to preparing for the next cycle.

A few tried newly introduced measures, including experimental pheromone-trapping wires meant to lure away pink bollworm moths, though such methods remain on the margins of common practice.


Many growers say that advice from officials, however well-intentioned, tends to arrive after the damage is already done. One farmer in Yavatmal put it simply, saying he wished he had been warned in time to pull his crop before the pests moved in. Instead, he found his entire patch full of worms, standing dead, with no market for what remained.




Climate Patterns Behind Recurring Pest Outbreaks


Entomologists and agronomists studying Vidarbha's pest problem point to climate variability as a contributing factor.


Monsoon patterns across central India have grown less predictable in recent years, marked by long dry spells followed by sudden, heavy cloudbursts. That unpredictability creates near ideal breeding conditions for many of the insects involved.

Pink bollworm, for instance, tends to flourish in cotton fields left unharvested into the cooler months, and extended monsoon rains often encourage farmers to delay picking, inadvertently giving the pest more time to multiply. Long dry periods work differently but cause similar harm, weakening cotton plants and forcing growers to irrigate or prune more heavily, both of which can disturb the natural predators that would otherwise keep pest numbers in check.


Soybean viruses follow a related pattern, riding on whiteflies that swarm during hot days and warm nights. In 2023, a gap in rainfall pushed soil temperatures unusually high, placing stress on young crops. When the rains eventually returned, the sudden rise in moisture allowed fungi and leaf-eating insects to multiply at the same time, together overwhelming plants that might otherwise have coped with one threat alone.


Multi-cropping systems and intensive land use across the belt mean pests now have fewer natural breaks in their life cycle. Where a single cotton season once helped interrupt pest populations, many farmers today replant the same fields immediately or switch straight from cotton to soybean, which keeps pests active in the system from one season to the next.


Growers accept that these pest threats are likely to return until the larger climatic and farming patterns behind them change. Some have begun experimenting with longer fallow periods, mixed cropping, or organic sprays developed locally. Others track satellite weather forecasts for early clues about a difficult year ahead. Given the scale of damage seen over the last three seasons, many farmers now plan for uncertainty as standard practice, preparing for the worst while still hoping for a better outcome at harvest time.


For many households in Vidarbha, planning ahead now means keeping half an eye on the sky and the other half on the shifting behaviour of moths, flies and viruses that show up with little warning. Whether the next kharif season brings clear fields or another round of yellowed leaves and hollow cotton bolls will not be known until the crop is well underway.

Farmers who have lived through several difficult seasons in a row already understand that a good sowing does not guarantee a good harvest. For now, most are left watching, spraying, and waiting to see which pest turns up first this time around.
