Nagpur, fondly known as the “Orange City,” witnessed a transformative year in 2024. As the city balanced rapid development with its rich cultural heritage, it faced numerous milestones and challenges that shaped its journey.

From political victories to infrastructural advancements, Nagpur continued to solidify its position as a key urban centre in Maharashtra.

The year also saw the city addressing issues related to public safety, urban planning, and governance, reflecting its evolving priorities.

While the city celebrated many milestones, it also encountered critical concerns that demand attention as it strides towards 2025.

Political Developments: Leadership and Legislative Milestones

Nagpur maintained its prominence in the political landscape of Maharashtra in 2024. A pivotal moment was the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections held in November, where Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emerged victorious from the Nagpur South West constituency.

His win, with a margin of 39,710 votes over his Congress rival, underscored the Bharatiya Janata Party’s stronghold in the city.

Adding to this political fervour was Nitin Gadkari’s re-election as Member of Parliament from the Nagpur constituency.

Winning by an impressive margin of 137,603 votes, Gadkari’s victory reaffirmed his popularity and commitment to the city’s development. These events underlined Nagpur’s critical role in shaping Maharashtra’s political narrative.

Infrastructure and Urban Development: Roads to Progress

Nagpur took significant strides in infrastructure development this year. The much-anticipated Nagpur–Bhandara–Gondia Expressway project commenced in 2024.

Designed as a greenfield six-to-four-lane expressway, this initiative aims to enhance connectivity between Nagpur SEZ and the neighbouring regions of Bhandara and Gondia, promising to boost regional trade and reduce travel time.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government’s approval of the Nagpur–Goa Expressway alignment in February 2024 marked another milestone.

Known as the Shaktipeeth Expressway, this project is expected to foster tourism and strengthen economic ties between the Vidarbha region and Goa.

This incident drew widespread public criticism, calling for greater accountability in urban projects.

Public Transport: High-Speed Connectivity

On September 16, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Nagpur–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express.

This semi-high-speed train has not only enhanced connectivity between Nagpur and Telangana’s Secunderabad but has also significantly reduced travel time, offering passengers a modern and comfortable transit experience. The launch symbolised India’s growing emphasis on efficient and sustainable public transport solutions.

Cultural Events: Celebrating Diversity and Heritage

Nagpur’s cultural calendar was abuzz with activity in 2024. The Khasdar Sanskrutik Mahotsav, a flagship cultural festival spearheaded by Nitin Gadkari, celebrated its ninth edition.

Bollywood actress Kajol inaugurated this ten-day extravaganza, which featured captivating performances by artists like Amit Trivedi, Adnan Sami, and Mika Singh. From music and dance to poetry recitals, the festival showcased India’s rich cultural diversity.

The Orange City LGBT Pride March, held on January 6, 2024, stood out as a vibrant and inclusive event.

Organised by the Sarathi Trust in collaboration with the Keshav Suri Foundation, the seventh edition of this march witnessed widespread participation. It served as a powerful platform for advocating LGBTQ+ rights, reflecting Nagpur’s progressive social outlook.

Another notable cultural event was the Global Nagpur Awards 2024, hosted by the Nagpur First Foundation on December 8. This ceremony celebrated individuals and organisations that brought global recognition to the city, further cementing Nagpur’s position on the international map.

Economic and Industrial Growth: A Hub of Opportunities

Nagpur’s industrial prowess shone brightly with events like IndoMach Nagpur 2024, an industrial machinery and engineering exhibition held from December 6 to 8.

The event provided a platform for showcasing cutting-edge technology and innovation, attracting businesses and professionals from across the country.

Additionally, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation secured ₹684 crore in funding for various development projects, including ₹78 crore earmarked for flood relief.

These allocations underscore the administration’s commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure and addressing pressing challenges.

Challenges in Public Safety and Governance

While Nagpur celebrated remarkable achievements in 2024, the city also grappled with significant challenges in public safety and governance.

These issues underscored the need for enhanced oversight, better planning, and proactive measures to ensure the well-being of its residents.

Highway Safety Concerns

One of the most alarming incidents this year occurred on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Highway, where over 50 vehicles were punctured after passing over a fallen iron board.

This mishap caused widespread traffic disruptions and left numerous passengers stranded.

The incident raised questions about the maintenance standards and safety protocols on one of Maharashtra’s most prominent expressways. It also highlighted the necessity of stricter inspection mechanisms to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Cybercrime on the Rise

Nagpur saw a worrying uptick in cybercrimes, with the city’s cyber cell registering 144 cases from January to December 2024.

However, only six cases were charge-sheeted during this period, pointing to challenges in investigating and prosecuting these offences.

The rise in digital crime reflects the increasing reliance on technology and the corresponding vulnerabilities it creates.

The need for robust cybercrime investigation units, specialised training for law enforcement, and public awareness campaigns has never been more critical.

A glaring example was the deterioration of a ₹3.88 crore DP road connecting Hazaripahad and Friends Colony, which began falling apart just 17 months after completion.

Residents called for stringent quality checks and transparency in public works to avoid similar situations in the future.

Flood Management and Urban Planning

The city’s susceptibility to floods remains an ongoing concern. Despite receiving ₹78 crore in funding specifically for flood relief, Nagpur faced criticism for its inadequate drainage systems and unplanned urban growth.

Heavy rains during the monsoon season caused waterlogging in several areas, disrupting daily life and exposing the gaps in the city’s infrastructure planning.

Public Accountability and Trust
