No city for Walking

Updated: Feb 20, 2023

The benefits of walking are numerous and well known. From weight management to cardiovascular health, walking is an activity everyone must do, especially when they have started ageing. The great thing about walking is that it is free and anyone with two functional legs can perform it.

More Feet Less Square Feet

With increasing awareness of fitness amongst people, more and more people are flocking into parks and playgrounds around Nagpur for their morning and evening walks.

Eventually there comes a point where these places are crowded with people and an activity which should be therapeutic and enriching ends up being just another walk, avoiding bumping into people and awkward conversations.

Poor Planning?

This raises the question on the lack of walking space in residential buildings. Most residential complexes are made in a way so that there is just enough space to cram in the vehicle of its residents. However, a place to have a walk without disturbance is not to be seen. Buying a place to stay is considered a ‘wholesome’ experience where not just the home but also its surroundings makes it so. But the buildings nowadays are not even fit to be called a concrete ‘jungle’, as a jungle has ample place to walk. As a result people drive to the nearest park to take a walk, or worse they give up on the idea of walking.

It is understandable that more homes are needed as the population grows and there is not always availability of space to accommodate a large park or a walking zone. However a small area to walk, exclusively for the residents of that complex can go a long way towards making Nagpur a fit city.
