Salamati 8.0: Safety and Winter Aid Drive for Nagpur’s Construction Workers

Construction is one of the most dangerous industries to work in. In 2020, this industry experienced the most workplace deaths. Luckily, there are many innovations that help make construction a safer industry.
The safety kits help in many ways to avert such possible mishaps by making the employees visible.
High-visibility clothing also significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents. While this safety clothing will not completely prevent every accident, it makes construction sites an all-around safer place to work.
Project Salamati by Levellers Foundation is an ongoing project that has facilitated 250+construction workers with safety kits, mentorship and pain relief medical aid uptl now.
It got initiated with an aim to work closely with hardworking construction workers in understanding their problems and educating them on health, safety and well-being and creating awareness about their rights.
Programme Execution on 16th November 25
On 16th November 2025, the Levellers Foundation team conducted Salamati 8.0 for 20construction workers at Shivaji Nagar Park, Nagpur.
The programme aimed at engaging with the construction workers in understanding their needs, interacting with them and providing them with the Salamati kit that included safety and winter essentials to protect them from accidents and cold, as construction workers are exposed to various hazards during the cold weather on sites.
Each kit included 15 items, namely, a helmet, a highlighter safety jacket, industrial gloves, a steel water bottle, a shawl, a pair of winter gloves and socks, a napkin, Vicks VapoRub, Dabur Honitus, AP Balm, 5 Kg Rice grains, a stationery kit and sweets. 20 such kits were distributed.
Sessions, Demonstrations and Participant Engagement
Key highlights of the program, along with safety and winter kit distribution, include: Architect Samruddhi S Chaphale, Founder, Levellers Foundation and architect at Sam’s Drafting Board, along with her team, mentored the construction workers on safety at the construction site by demonstrating how to wear a construction safety kit.
The construction workers shared experiences they face at the construction site and suggested measures.
The programme concluded with felicitating each worker with a shawl and distributing the kits. Team member, Tanaya S Chaphale explained the Salamati kit and its various items to all the workers. Miss. Yogeshree Borde, a 200-hour certified Yoga trainer, conducted a Yoga and Breathwork session for construction workers that uplifted the spirit of the workers and became a refreshing start to the program.
Mr Nitin Meshram, a Project Lead at Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA), Indiaconducted a session on Claiming the City: Land Titling and the Right to Housing in Nagpur with a movie presentation and answered the various queries of construction workers on the subject.
Shri. Ravindra Kaskhedikar from Jan Akrosh, seeing the enthusiastic and young team of Levellers Foundation conducting the Salamati event, graced the occasion, offering advice to construction workers on road safety and to be good citizens of the country.
The various volunteers who helped make this program a success include Kewal Rewatkar, Santosh Bawiskar, Prarthana Dongre, Shivangi Prasad, Tejaswini Deshmukh, Sangharatna Somkuwar, Avanti S Chaphale, and Shubhangi Khobragade
