The Samruddhi Mahamarg, a project connecting Mumbai to Nagpur, has been celebrated as a milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development.
Spanning an impressive 701 kilometres, this expressway has significantly reduced travel time between the two major cities.
For Nagpur, the expressway symbolises its rising importance as a central hub for commerce and connectivity.
However, despite its grand scale and intentions, the Samruddhi Mahamarg has encountered several hurdles, with safety concerns and wear-and-tear issues being prominent.
These challenges have sparked a broader conversation about the expressway’s effectiveness and its impact, particularly on Nagpur and its surrounding regions.
Safety Concerns on the Nagpur-Mumbai Corridor
The Samruddhi Mahamarg, designed for high-speed travel, has faced mounting scrutiny over its safety record.
In 2023 alone, the expressway witnessed 860 accidents by August, with more than 100 fatalities.
The road’s long and uninterrupted stretches, particularly those leading into Nagpur, have been identified as contributors to driver fatigue, commonly referred to as “highway hypnosis.” This state of reduced alertness has been linked to several accidents, posing a serious risk to those travelling the route.
Nagpur, being at the eastern terminus of the expressway, has seen a significant influx of vehicles arriving from Mumbai and other regions.
Overspeeding has been a persistent issue, with drivers tempted by the smooth road to exceed safe limits. Tyre bursts, often caused by prolonged high-speed driving, have also contributed to severe accidents.
Such incidents have raised concerns about whether the expressway is adequately equipped to handle these challenges, especially in the Nagpur region, where traffic density is often higher.
Efforts to curb these issues have included pre-entry vehicle inspections, enforcement of speed limits, and awareness campaigns.
These measures have had a positive impact, with fatalities in 2024 decreasing by 29% compared to the previous year.
However, the number of traffic violations remains alarmingly high.
Helmetless riding, failure to use seatbelts, and mobile phone usage while driving are common infractions observed on the Nagpur-Mumbai corridor. This indicates that while progress has been made, significant challenges persist.
Wear and Tear of the Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway

Despite being operational for just over two years, the expressway has shown signs of wear and tear. Near Nagpur, as well as other sections of the route, reports of cracks, potholes, and uneven road surfaces have become frequent.
In July 2024, a major crack was discovered near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, measuring 50 feet in length.
This raised questions about the construction quality and the long-term durability of the road. Although the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) attributed the issue to shifting soil, the incident has left many commuters wary, particularly those frequently travelling to and from Nagpur.
A particularly alarming case occurred in March 2024, when a crater formed on a section near Amravati.
Investigations revealed that the damage was likely caused by point load pressure from a heavy vehicle jack. Although MSRDC classified it as minor, such occurrences have heightened concerns about similar vulnerabilities along the expressway, especially on the stretches leading to Nagpur.
Drivers in Nagpur have also reported frequent tyre punctures, attributed to debris left on the road from retreaded truck tyres.
In one widely reported incident, 13 vehicles experienced punctures on the same stretch in a single night. This not only inconvenienced drivers but also highlighted the need for better maintenance practices.
Nagpur’s Experience with the Samruddhi Mahamarg
As the eastern gateway of the expressway, Nagpur has been significantly impacted by the Samruddhi Mahamarg. For many in the city, the reduced travel time to Mumbai has been a game-changer, boosting economic activity and enhancing connectivity.
However, the challenges faced by commuters on the expressway have tempered some of this enthusiasm.
Drivers travelling between Nagpur and Mumbai have often noted uneven surfaces and remnants of damaged tyres along the road.
While the route is generally smooth, certain sections, particularly near Shirdi and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, have drawn complaints.
In Igatpuri, where the approach road to the expressway was found to be in poor condition, MSRDC initiated repairs, but these were estimated to take at least two months.
This has caused delays and frustration for commuters, especially those relying on the expressway for regular travel to Nagpur.
MSRDC has been working to address these issues. Concrete panels have been replaced in damaged areas, and additional monitoring systems have been put in place to ensure the road’s quality. However, for Nagpur residents who have come to depend on the expressway, the recurring problems have underscored the need for consistent and proactive maintenance.
A Project of Contrasts
The Samruddhi Mahamarg continues to be a major landmark in Maharashtra’s infrastructure landscape, especially for residents of Nagpur, who rely on the expressway for quicker access to Mumbai and other regions.
The time savings it offers have transformed travel between major cities, providing a faster and more direct route for both commercial and private vehicles.
However, the challenges that have surfaced highlight the complexities involved in managing such a large-scale project.
From safety concerns to road durability, the expressway remains under constant scrutiny. As more commuters, particularly from Nagpur, adopt this route, real-world usage continues to test its limits.
Whether through increased safety interventions or sustained maintenance efforts, addressing the concerns that have emerged will be crucial in determining how well this ambitious project serves its intended purpose in the years to come.
