In 2024, Nagpur recorded a sharp increase in crimes targeting women. Within the first eight months, 213 cases of rape were registered. This translates to approximately 25 women falling victim every month.


The year also saw 320 cases of molestation during the same period. These statistics mark a 16% increase compared to the corresponding months in 2023.

Such numbers serve as a grim reminder of the dangers women face daily in their homes and public spaces.


Kidnapping is another alarming concern. Between January and August 2024, the city reported 257 cases of abduction. This equates to nearly one woman or girl being taken every single day. Worryingly, 148 individuals remain missing, a statistic that underscores significant challenges in tracing and recovering those abducted.



Domestic violence has remained a persistent issue. From January to August 2024, 193 cases were reported by women against their spouses or in-laws.

These incidents often highlight enduring societal problems that refuse to dissipate despite evolving legal frameworks. Dowry-related violence, too, continues to surface, with three cases reported during this period. While this number may seem small, each incident reflects deeply ingrained practices that put women at risk.


As the city grapples with physical crimes, the rise of online harassment presents a modern challenge. Nagpur’s cybercrime unit addressed 759 cases involving online harassment of women and children in a single year.


These incidents range from cyberstalking to explicit threats, exposing the growing menace of digital exploitation. The increasing reliance on technology has inadvertently given perpetrators new avenues to target women, making robust cyber protections more critical than ever.

The rise in crimes against women has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. The Nagpur Police, tasked with addressing these issues, have taken several steps aimed at improving safety for women across the city.


One of the most significant measures undertaken has been the expansion of surveillance through the installation of new cameras. Plans to install 1,100 additional CCTV units across high-risk zones are underway. These cameras are intended to monitor hotspots and assist law enforcement in deterring potential crimes.


Authorities have identified over 330 areas within Nagpur that lack adequate safety measures.


Many of these locations remain devoid of proper lighting or functional surveillance equipment, making them vulnerable to criminal activity. Although these areas have been mapped, the absence of immediate infrastructural improvements leaves women at risk.


The Damini Squad, a specialised police unit, has been instrumental in safeguarding women. Despite its small size, operating with only 11 personnel, the team handles an average of 57 assignments daily.


Their work includes patrolling sensitive areas, conducting outreach programmes in educational institutions, and engaging with communities to promote awareness.


Despite these initiatives, several gaps in execution and planning hinder progress.

To provide easier access to support and legal assistance, women’s help desks have been established in every police station. These desks serve as a point of contact for those seeking immediate help or filing complaints.


These specialised units focus on preventing and investigating cases of trafficking, a crime that disproportionately affects women and young girls.

By coordinating with various departments, they aim to curb trafficking operations within the region.


As part of its efforts to address digital threats, the government launched the Cyber Safe Women initiative. This programme educates women on recognising, reporting, and preventing online abuse, empowering them to navigate the digital realm more securely.



For every initiative rolled out, the struggle faced by countless women remains a stark reality. Statistics reflect only the cases that are reported, leaving one to question the countless incidents that go unregistered due to fear, stigma, or lack of awareness.


The reality of women’s safety in Nagpur is a story of numbers, challenges, and unanswered questions.


Every case of violence or harassment represents not just an individual tragedy but a collective failure to create an environment where women feel safe and respected. Despite efforts to bolster security through technology, specialised task forces, and awareness campaigns, gaps remain.
